Is Google really devaluing directories?
OK, Google dropped the mention of adding you website to relevant directories (DMOZ, Yahoo! Directory,…), but is Google devaluing the relevant links and lowering your ranking because you are listed in a directory.

In the Google Webmaster Guidelines, Google has dropped the suggestion that webmasters submit sites to relevant directories, DMOZ, Yahoo! Dir, botw, as well as others.….

Testing Blog editor with Flock

August 24th, 2008

I have tried this with another domain that I help manage, and it worked great.

First you have to have the web browser Flock, then set up your blog site information. Works pretty nice.  If you haven’t tried Flock, download it and try it sometime.

No other news to report. Still liking my new job. I worked last night on a script that will make things go a little faster with optimization of customer sites.

Learning some new software for optimization.  It is called Market Samurai, it is still in the beta stages and has some bugs.  Once they get things worked out, it will be an SEO’s dream. More on that later.

My New Job!

August 13th, 2008

I have taken a job with a local Web Design and Web Hosting company here in IL. I am their newest Search Engine Optimizer (SEO).

Here are some of the things that I will be involved with: keyword selection, domain names, on page optimization, copywriting, blogging, site architecture, usability, analytics, PPC advertising, public relations, viral marketing, and link building. Yes, yes I have a lot to learn, and a short time to do it. Speaking of time frame. I start Monday the 18th. So I do have some time to learn some of this stuff.

The Name of the company is VisionFriendly.com. They have an office in Sugar Grove, IL, but are moving in the next two weeks. They are waiting on approval from the town of Yorkville to make their new home (where I now reside). As a matter of fact, the location that they want is about a mile from our apartment.

Meta Tags Explained

May 31st, 2008

Within your HTML, each meta tag should span one line only and there is no need for any spaces, just add a comma between each keyword. There are limits to the amount of keywords that can be added, so make sure that you make them relevant to the content of your site.

<head>

<meta http-equiv=”Content-Language” content=”en-us”>
This tells crawlers or spiders the language to index.

<meta name=”Author” content=”Erin Taylor - ErinTaylorDesign.com”>
I have to take credit where it is due.

<meta name=”copyright” content=”ErinTaylorDesign.com”>

<meta name=”country” content=”United States”>
Tells the site’s origin.

Getting Paid

May 28th, 2008

We all have customers that always pay slow. What do you do to get them to pay?

One method that I use for design customers that I do not host is to do all of the development and testing on my own system, this includes letting the customer test and play with their new website. But this also means that they don’t get their new website until I have the money in hand.

It is easier with customers that I host. I just take their site down, and let them know that there is still an outstanding balance on their account and this needs attention. I like to play nice, but sometimes I just have to be an ass.

In either case, I tell my customers that I will bend over backwards to get them what they want. I do what it takes to get the job done, and in return, I expect to be paid on time. Does that sound all that bad to you? OK, I am in this line of business because I enjoy my work, but I also expect to compensated for my time.

But, to be honest, I rarely have to go that far. What can I say, I love my clients.
